Follow the instructions that come with the program. Since the card wasn't recognized by camera, I couldn't use it to format the card. I tried the tape thing first, didn't work. I tried formatting the card to the camera, but it gave the "card protected" then too and would not format. I had this 'Memory Card Error' problem this week.. The toothpick and compressed air worked 1st try. PERFECT.
I am tring everything and result zero. Stating this once again, formatting will also totally erase your card, so only do this after you've recovered and saved to your computer any important photos from the card. the memory card in our Canon powershot SD 780 began saying "Camera Locked!", out of nowhere... My husband has a habit of leaving things in his pockets - recently a USB key went through the washer and dryer and seems just fine.
