Have you tried opening a cmd window and checking how long it takes to get an ID address with ipconfig command. If I> try, the computer hangs. I have tried to connnect just straight through modem with no router.. Login now.

Woala, it's working! If it's not one designed for that PC's hardware, your issue starts with missing drivers which seem all to common to forget about. I am not a novice at this but simple instructions would be greatly appreciated. I had the same problem with ZONEALARM....
this makes no sense, sounds like a problem from the service provider.
